Product Overview: Hexagonal Boron Nitride (HBN)

Hexagonal Boron Nitride (HBN), often termed White Graphite, is an advanced ceramic material composed of boron and nitrogen atoms. With a chemical composition of 43.6% boron and 56.4% nitrogen, it exists in several crystalline forms, including hexagonal (HBN), rhombohedral (RBN), cubic (CBN), and wurtzite (WBN) boron nitride.

HBN is synthesized by melting B₂O₃ with NH₄Cl or through boron combustion in NH₃. Its graphite-like structure delivers exceptional thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and chemical resistance—making it ideal for high-temperature and demanding industrial applications.

Key Technical Parameters

Product Category Mean Particle Size (nm) Specific Surface Area (m²/g) Bulk Density (g/cm³) Crystal Structure Color
Nano Grade 50 43.6 0.11 Hexagonal White
Sub-Micron Grade 600 9.16 2.30 Hexagonal White

Material Properties & Advantages

  • High Thermal Conductivity: Efficient heat dissipation even at elevated temperatures.

  • Excellent Electrical Insulation: Volume resistivity >10¹⁵ Ω·cm.

  • Outstanding Thermal Stability: Service temperatures up to 900°C in oxidizing atmospheres and 2800°C in inert/reducing environments.

  • Low Thermal Expansion: CTE (c-axis): 41×10⁻⁶/°C; (d-axis): -2.3×10⁻⁶/°C.

  • Superior Mechanical Properties: Compressive strength of 170 MPa.

  • Chemical Inertness: Resistant to inorganic acids, water, and molten metals.

  • Good Lubricity: Low coefficient of friction, especially at high temperatures; often blended with graphite fluoride or MoS₂ for enhanced performance.

Applications of Hexagonal Boron Nitride

  • High-Temperature Lubricants: Dispersions in oil or water for wire drawing, pressing, and sliding parts in high-temperature furnaces.

  • Self-Lubricating Components: Bearings and seals in sintered form.

  • Thermal Management Materials: Ideal for heat sinks, insulators, and substrates.

  • Protective Coatings: Used in metallurgy, electronics, and aerospace for its non-wetting and release properties.

  • Tooling & Abrasives: When converted to cubic boron nitride (CBN), it serves as a superhard material for cutting and grinding.

Manufacturing & Processing

HBN is typically produced in a graphite-like structure. Under high temperature (1800°C) and high pressure (8000 MPa), it transforms into cubic boron nitride (CBN)—an ultra-hard material suited for abrasive tools, cutting instruments, and drill bits.

Why Choose Our Hexagonal Boron Nitride?

We supply high-purity HBN in nano and sub-micron grades, optimized for superior thermal management, electrical insulation, and lubrication across industries. Whether for R&D or industrial production, our HBN ensures reliability and performance under extreme conditions.
